Frequently Asked Questions

Is this word counter free to use?

Yes. This word counter is completely free, has no sign-up, and no limit on how much text you can analyze.

Does this tool store or upload my text?

No. Every count runs locally in your browser using JavaScript. Your text is never uploaded to a server or stored anywhere.

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time divides your total word count by a reading speed, which defaults to 225 words per minute and can be adjusted in the Options panel. Speaking time uses an average speaking pace of 130 words per minute.

What counts as a "difficult word"?

Words with three or more syllables are flagged as difficult, a common heuristic used in readability scores such as Flesch-Kincaid.

Can I count words in a file or a webpage?

Yes. Use the File Upload tab to load a .txt or .md file, or the URL tab to try fetching a public page's text directly in your browser.

Why did fetching a URL fail?

Most websites block cross-origin requests from other domains for security (CORS), so the browser can't read their content directly. If fetching fails, copy and paste the text into the Text tab instead.
